When you decide to quit a substance, it can prove challenging. Some people struggle with admitting they have a problem, while others have a hard time breaking away from the environment of drugs. When you make the move to break free from drugs or alcohol, it’s critical to have a support system in place. You want to be sure to think about stress management for recovery and how you will deal with it.

During this challenging time, you want to proceed forward on the journey of healing by taking it one step at a time. This way you don’t overwhelm yourself and you can keep a focus on your managing stressors for addiction recovery.

Stress and the Body

Stress can do a lot of crazy things to the body. In fact, you can feel plenty of physical symptoms by having too much stress in your life. When you are in recovery, you want to be sure that your stress levels are kept low because it will affect your sobriety.

When the body is over-stressed, you won’t be as successful in giving up drugs for good. You will be more prone to slipping back into the habit of using drugs or alcohol for relief from the stress. This can prolong your recovery.

How does stress harm your body? The following are a few of the symptoms you may experience if you’re too overwhelmed with stress:

  • Rapid heart rate
  • Increase in blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Rapid breathing
  • High blood sugar
  • Headaches
  • Indigestion and stomach upset
  • Weakened immune system

These physical symptoms can make it hard to focus on anything. When you’re not feeling well, you won’t be able to work as well or accomplish the goals you have set forth. Consequently, this can lead to more severe symptoms.

In addition, some of these symptoms may lead to people having other mental health issues such as depression or anxiety. Therefore, it’s critical to have a stress management plan in place for recovery. This might include regular visits to a mental health treatment center.

How to Manage Stress For Recovery

A stress management plan for recovery will get you through the challenging times ahead. Some of the steps you can take to ensure that stress will be at a minimum include:

Connect with Positive Influences

Find positive people and surround yourself with them. They will be a network of support for you during recovery. You can accomplish this by participating in group therapy sessions or local support groups.

Attend a Rehab Facility

A drug rehab center will give you the encouragement and tools you need to overcome addiction. Through detox and therapeutic support, you will be on your way to a healthy new life.

Join a Therapy Program

Take time to join a therapy session or two as part of your rehab. This will be instrumental in helping you learn various skills necessary to get through stressors you’ll face. Group and family therapy are helpful as you attempt to navigate the dynamics of dealing with others.
