How Much Does Rehab Cost?

“How much does rehab cost?” is a nuanced question, with many variables impacting the overall cost of treatment.

If you want to know for sure how much rehab will cost for you and how much your insurance will help with the cost, please call our admissions team now and we can walk you through the process.

A study funded by NIAAA (the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) shows a wide gap between those diagnosed with addiction and those obtaining specialized treatment. If you or a loved one are looking for help, the team at our Orange County rehab and California rehab can help you.

The study shows that one-third of all adults in the United States develop alcohol use disorder at some point, but only 20% receive professional treatment.

With 10% of adults in the US developing substance use disorder at some point and only 25% ever receiving any form of care, we can again see a glaring disparity between those requiring treatment and those obtaining treatment.

Why is this?

Well, the perceived cost of treatment is perhaps the primary barrier for many people ready to commit to recovery but unable to meet the costs.

There’s good news, though. There are many types of rehab that don’t involve packing your bags and heading to an upscale inpatient treatment center for a month or more.

Even better, if you opt for outpatient addiction treatment, you’ll find most health insurance policies provide coverage, so you could kickstart your recovery sooner than you imagined.

In this blog, we have highlighted the key factors that are important to know when you’re asking, “how much is inpatient rehab?”, or “does rehab cost money?”.

Does Rehab Cost Money?

Whether it’s you or a loved one grappling with addiction, you’ll need to think not only about getting the right type of treatment but also about how you’re going to pay for that treatment. At which point you may be wondering: does rehab cost money?.

If you have already started trying to establish a benchmark for addiction costs, you have doubtless found that most recovery centers will not openly disclose the cost of treatment programs on their websites. Beyond this, if you contact rehab centers to discuss treatment, cost is not disclosed early on in the discussion. There is a good reason for this, too: you’ll need a thorough evaluation before the treatment center can accurately predict the overall cost of the most appropriate program.

In many cases, people pay for addiction treatment out of pocket using savings.

If you intend to pay for treatment but you lack the funds to pay upfront, many treatment facilities will offer payment plans and financing if it helps to spread the load. You may or may not pay interest for this.

While some local health departments offer free or subsidized addiction treatment, these programs are hard to find, with books often booked for months ahead.

Fortunately, most health insurance policies will now pay for rehab costs. You will most likely need to pay a deductible, and coverage will vary from policy to policy. Where some policies will cover IOPs (intensive outpatient programs) and PHPs (partial hospitalization programs), others will only cover regular outpatient treatment.

So not that we’ve answered, “does rehab cost money?”, let’s move on to the question, “what is the average cost of rehab?”.

What is the Average Cost of Rehab?

So how much is rehab typically? The type and scope of care offered by a treatment center will impact the average cost of drug rehab or alcohol rehab. For instance, if you are trying to find the average cost of inpatient drug rehab, well that’s going to look a lot different than the cost of just a detox or IOP.

Many other variables influence the overall cost of inpatient rehab, including:

  • Whether or not you need medical detox
  • Geographical location
  • Any medications required
  • For inpatient treatment, the length of the program, the standard of accommodation and the extent of the amenities will all dramatically affect cost
  • For outpatient treatment, the number of weekly sessions and the level of counseling required will impact the cost

The following estimates of the cost of inpatient rehab are based on studies and reports from individual treatment facilities.

Detox Detox ranges from $1,000 to $1,500 in total, but to be candid, detox/rehab has a MUCH better chance of succeeding if it’s tied to an inpatient program. Most inpatient rehabs include detox in the cost of a program. The exact cost of detox depends on whether it’s part of an inpatient program and the type of drug addiction being treated. Substances with dangerous detox side effects require more careful monitoring, making the price higher.
Inpatient Rehab Some inpatient rehabs may cost around $6,000 for a 30-day program. Well-known centers often cost up to $20,000 for a 30-day program. For those requiring 60- or 90-day programs, the total average of costs could range anywhere from $12,000 to $60,000.
Outpatient Rehab Outpatient programs for mild to moderate addictions are cheaper than inpatient rehab. Many cost $5,000 for a three-month program. Some outpatient programs, such as the program at Hazelden Betty Ford, cost $10,000. The price tag depends on how often the individual visits the center each week and for how long.
Medications The type of treatment and medications needed affects the price tag on rehab. Some people don’t need medication for their addiction. Medications most often treat alcohol and opiate addiction. It can cost several thousand dollars a year. Year-long methadone treatment for heroin users costs around $4,700.

How Much Does Rehab Cost with Insurance

Man can afford Rehab

If you’re wondering, “how much does rehab cost with insurance?”, we can tell you that rehab costs with insurance will vary from plan to plan and from provider to provider.

With treatment ranging from completely free to over $100,000 a month, you’ll find most treatment programs cost anywhere from $2,000 to $25,000 monthly, whether you’re using insurance or paying out of pocket.

The most important thing when you’re wondering “how much does rehab cost?” is to establish whether your health insurance policy will cover all or part of the costs of treatment, and whether you are entitled to inpatient or outpatient treatment under your policy.

There is no substitute for speaking with your insurer directly, so you can quickly and easily determine your best course of action now you’re ready for recovery.

How Much Does Alcohol Rehab Cost?

So how much does alcohol rehab cost? Just like with addiction treatment more generally, there is no universal and average cost of alcohol rehab.

The price of treatment for alcohol use disorder is contingent on many factors, including:

  • Length of treatment
  • Type of program
  • Amenities offered
  • Accommodation (for inpatient rehab)
  • Geographic location
  • Amenities offered
  • Medical detox
  • Medications required

National Drug Helpline data shows the following average costs for alcohol rehab:

  • 90-day outpatient program: $1,400 to $10,000
  • 30-day intensive outpatient program: $3,000 to $10,000
  • Inpatient rehab: $5,000 to $80,000, depending on the length of stay

Even if you look at the cost for alcohol rehab and find it initially overwhelming, it is always possible to find a way to fund addiction treatment.

The ACA (Affordable Care Act) compels health insurance providers to offer coverage for drug addiction and alcohol addiction.

In the case of an alcohol use disorder, you’ll need to check the details of your policy closely. Many insurance providers only cover up to 30 days in residential rehab. If you have been drinking heavily for decades, this may not be long enough for your needs.

So how much does rehab cost for a month, typically?

How Much Does 30 Day Inpatient Rehab Cost?

The cost of inpatient rehab fluctuates widely depending on your insurance coverage and the rehab facility you choose.

However, typically a 30 day inpatient rehab will cost $5000+, which can increase if ongoing care is needed.

If you still have questions “how much do rehab centers cost?”, calling the facility you’re interested in going to and speaking with their team can give you a more clear idea of what rehab costs at that location.
