The number of people with depression and anxiety in the United States is well into the millions. Of course, this would represent those cases that are diagnosed. However, many people may not have an official diagnosis. Some people may suspect they have one of these conditions by the way they feel but haven’t sought treatment or diagnosis.

Connection Between Depression and Anxiety

As stated above, depression and anxiety do have some things in common. For one thing, people with either of these two conditions often go untreated. This leads to them self-medicating, which often involves the use of drugs or alcohol. Consequently, people with depression or anxiety may also have a dual diagnosis.

dual diagnosis disorder involves two simultaneous conditions. For example, you may have depression and substance or alcohol use disorder. Or you could have anxiety and substance or alcohol use disorder. It’s critical to treat these conditions together so that the therapist can help you get to the root of the problem. Often times, people treat the symptoms and not the problem, which leads them back to the problem later in life. The goal of a good mental health treatment program is to avoid relapse.

What Is Depression?

You may wonder what depression is and whether you have it. People may feel like they have depression because their emotions are “down” or they’re in the dumps. However, clinical depression is more intense than a “bad day.” It interferes with your ability to function because it’s so extreme. This causes of depression can range, but oftentimes there is other mental health problems, past trauma, or addiction involved.

Also, it causes physical and other symptoms besides feeling down. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Excessive loneliness
  • Irritability
  • Lack of enjoyment in things you used to like
  • Eating disorders
  • Insomnia
  • Low self-esteem
  • Unexplained aches and pains

What Is Anxiety?

We all face worries in life, especially nowadays, with all that’s going on. It’s easy to feel anxious about the uncertainty of life. An anxiety disorder can arise when irrational fears consume our thinking. This leads to unhealthy negative thoughts, and like depression, unexplained physical problems.

An anxiety disorder leads to worries that are disproportionate to the situation at hand. For example, you may have excessive worry about how you are performing on the job or how your child is doing in school. In fact, you may obsessively worry about your performance as a parent and become anxious, as you make decisions relating to your child.

Some symptoms of generalized anxiety are:

  • Often feeling like something terrible is going to happen
  • Insomnia
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Avoiding situations because of anxiety
  • Gastrointestinal problems
