If you’re struggling with alcohol use disorder or substance use disorder, getting the right treatment is vital. The same applies if you’re supporting a loved one through an addiction to drink or drugs.

Make the right decision and you could build a foundation for sustained recovery and long-lasting sobriety. Get this wrong and you may find yourself relapsing.

So, while financing inpatient drug and alcohol rehab may seem like a headache, you should consider this an investment in yourself rather than an expense.

The good news is, there are plenty of rehab centers in California offering a variety of inpatient treatment programs, as well as outpatient programs. If you don’t know the difference between inpatient and outpatient programs, we’ll clear that up for you today.

Now, while the abundance of treatment centers in Southern California offers you ample choice, not all of them are reliable. The ongoing opioid epidemic means that more and more treatment centers are springing up, not all of them effective or scrupulous. You should check that any rehab centers on your shortlist are reputable and deliver proven results.

Before we give you some pointers on assessing drug rehab centers in California, it’s vital to outline the various different treatment programs most treatment providers offer.

What Type of Rehab Do You Need?

Before you start examining the various treatment options at your disposal in California, the level of care you require will depend on many variables. Contributory factors include:

  • What substance you’re abusing
  • How long you’ve been abusing the substance
  • The severity of your substance use disorder
  • Your history of drug abuse
  • The quality of your home environment
  • Your finances
  • Any co-occurring disorders
  • Relevant health conditions
  • Your age and gender
  • Where you live
  • Your employment situation

All of these elements can impact the type of alcohol or drug rehab that makes the best fit. As an example, someone with an unsupportive home environment may find outpatient treatment challenging. In this case, sober living homes can provide a superior setting more conducive to recovery.

Further muddying the issue, many people addicted to drink or drugs have dual diagnoses. Also known as a co-occurring disorder, this expresses an underlying mental health condition present at the same time as addiction. Without the proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment, both issues can get worse.

However drug addiction treatment is delivered, it typically involves a combination of medications and psychotherapies like CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) and DBT (dialectical behavior therapy).

And, it’s the method of delivery we’ll investigate next so you can see clearly which option would be best suited for your addiction to drink or drugs.

Types of Addiction Treatment Programs in California

Addiction treatment can be broadly categorized as follows:

  • Detox
  • Residential inpatient treatment
  • Outpatient treatment
  • Partial-hospitalization programs
  • Intensive outpatient treatment

Detox

The most intense level of treatment is inpatient treatment. You should not confuse this with residential inpatient treatment – we’ll explain that directly below.

This form of treatment is strictly short-term, usually lasting for 5 days. The core purpose is stabilization, so the patient can step down the continuum of care.

With this kind of program, staff check up on you every 15 minutes, monitoring blood pressure and other vital signs.

As you would expect, this form of treatment is extremely expensive. That said, it can be highly effective for getting crisis situations under control.

With this program, staff will check a patient’s blood pressure every 15 minutes, check their room, and involve a lot of staff including doctors. It’s very expensive and intensive.

Even if this type of short-term inpatient treatment is necessary, and even if it works, you need to follow up after detox with something like a residential inpatient treatment program…

Residential inpatient treatment

Residential inpatient treatment is what most people think of when they imagine residential rehab for addiction to drink or drugs.

While residential inpatient treatment involves less intense medical supervision, you’ll still have all the support you need on hand. The focus instead is on building recovery skills and coping strategies so you can leave the treatment center with a better chance of managing cravings and much less chance of relapsing.

These programs last from 30 days to 90 days or more, depending on your circumstances and your addiction. You remain at the treatment center for the entire time.

You can expect to pay upwards of $20,000 for a month in residential rehab. Prices will vary significantly, so consider this only a benchmark. Most insurance policies will only meet this type of cost if you have already explored less expensive alternatives, or if it is deemed medically necessary (as in the case of severe addictions).

Outpatient treatment

Outpatient treatment programs allow you to live at home while attending individual and group sessions.

As well as these counseling sessions, you also have access to family therapy, various psychotherapies and behavioral therapies, like CBT and DBT, as well as a variety of other therapies and support groups.

Outpatient therapy normally starts quite intensively, and you can decrease the frequency of sessions as you become more confident and stronger in your recovery.

Partial-hospitalization programs

A partial-hospitalization program (PHP) is a structured program where you’ll have counseling sessions, both group and individual, for up to 6 hours every weekday.

Medication-assisted treatment can be delivered if appropriate alongside these other therapies.

If you don’t have a stable home environment, sober living homes might be worth considering. You can stay at one of these residences with other patients in recovery and addiction specialists. This provides a setting ideal for pursuing a PHP with the right support in place across the board.

Intensive outpatient treatment

Despite the name of this treatment, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) is less intensive than a PHP.

Stepping down the continuum of care to an IOP, you can expect to attend several individuals and/or group sessions weekly.

IOPs neatly plug the gap between residential rehab and transitioning back into regular life substance-free.

Medication-Assisted Treatment and Behavioral Therapies for Addiction Treatment

As mentioned above, addiction treatment for alcohol use disorder and substance use disorder usually features the following core components:

  • Medication-assisted treatment
  • Behavioral therapies

Medication-assisted treatment

Many people with substance use disorders also present with co-occurring mental health conditions or physical illnesses.

The most effective treatment for addiction both aspects head-on, using any approved medication that’s appropriate. Mood stabilizers and antidepressants are the most common medications used for this purpose.

Medication-assisted treatment can also help to alleviate the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms triggered by discontinuing substance use. FDA-approved medications can be especially beneficial for treating alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder.

MAT is only one arm of successful addiction treatment, though. Therapy is delivered in combination to give you a firm base to build from.

Behavioral therapies

Evidence-based talking therapies are behavioral therapies that help with the following:

  • Motivation
  • Overcoming patterns of negative thoughts
  • Developing coping strategies to counter cravings
  • Relationship issues
  • Parenting skills
  • Family dynamic

This type of therapy can be delivered in a group or individual setting.

A few words next on finding the best treatment center for you the easy way.

How to Find the Right Addiction Modern Drug Rehab Center in California

When you’re looking for the right rehab center, it’s easy to end up going round in circles with so many possibilities that you never end up picking one.

To help with your initial research into California drug and alcohol rehabs, consider these elements:

  • Accreditation
  • Background Check
  • Communication
  • Expertise

Accreditation

Make sure that any rehab centers on your initial shortlist are certified and licensed. You can check up on that right here.

Unlicensed treatment centers are not able to operate in California, which mercifully protects you to some large extent against unscrupulous providers.

Beyond the minimum requirement of licensing, look for certification offered when an addiction treatment center has achieved excellent results.

Background Check

While you may be satisfied that a treatment center is licensed and certified, if you have any lingering doubts, you could always contact your local regulatory agencies. This will allow you to discover if any complaints have been made against the center.

Communication

Great addiction treatment centers will make all points of contact and communication seamless.

You should feel that you are a priority during every interaction with a treatment center. If you’re assessing your options and you run up against any issues in this area, scratch that rehab from your list.

Expertise

No rehab center, however luxurious, will achieve impressive results without the right experts on board to deliver treatment.

Once you have a few centers on your shortlist, it’s worth researching and interviewing them to determine that they have the right specialist staff in place to provide the care you need. The most effective treatment centers have multi-disciplinary teams, medical and psychological, as well as spiritual.
