90-day rehab is a beneficial addiction treatment program for those suffering from severe substance abuse. 90-day rehab is reported by NIDA (the National Institute on Drug Abuse) as delivering the most favorable addiction treatment outcomes.

Recently published SAMHSA data shows that 28.5 million people in the US have alcohol use disorder and 40 million have substance use disorder. Not only is addiction in the United States on the rise, but less than 10% of those requiring treatment engage with any form of therapy.

Those who connect with addiction treatment programs have the following options:

In a 90-day rehab program, you get the same services found in shorter-term rehab, but with more time to ground yourself in a sober and positive environment.

The core difference between rehab programs of different lengths is the primary focus of care. A 30-day rehab program will concentrate mainly on detox and the treatment of immediately pressing symptoms of addiction. A longer rehab program, by contrast, allows more time for encouraging and implementing more permanent lifestyle changes – diet, sleep, and exercise, for instance. A 60-day rehab program falls somewhere in between these options.

What to Expect at 90-Day Drug Rehab

If you are ready to commit to recovery and considering 90-day rehab programs, you will find them in both the following forms:

  • 90-day inpatient rehab
  • 90-day outpatient rehab

Both delivery methods provide intensive treatment for alcohol use disorders, substance use disorders, or mental health disorders.

With a 90-day program, either inpatient or outpatient, you will have the unrushed opportunity to detox and withdrawal from substances before transitioning into ongoing recovery.

NIDA research indicates that those who remain in addiction treatment for at least 90 days typically enjoy higher rates of recovery without relapse. Three-month programs allow you and your treatment team the time to prepare a robust aftercare plan and relapse management strategies.

Most people with moderate or severe addictions find 90-day rehab programs the most appropriate.

The same applies to those who have previously attempted rehab but then relapsed. Most estimates show that up to 60% of those in recovery will relapse at some stage on their journey.

Anyone with a chaotic and unsupportive home environment would likely benefit from 90-day residential rehab, as would those with co-occurring disorders (addiction with co-occurring mental health disorders).

All those unable to commit to three months away from professional and personal obligations, on the other hand, will find 90-day outpatient rehab a much more flexible option.

After 90 days in rehab, you may need to step down to a lower level of care or you may be ready to smoothly transition back into day-to-day life.

What Happens During a 90-Day Rehab Program

90-day drug rehab and 90-day alcohol rehab can unfold in both inpatient and outpatient settings, then.

If you attend a 90-day residential rehab program, this provides time for an unhurried detox. You’ll have all the clinical and emotional support you need, as well as access to a variety of medications. This will help minimize the discomfort you feel during detox and withdrawal, and also reduce the intensity of cravings.

Before beginning a 90-day outpatient rehab program, on the other hand, you may detox at a medical detox center before commencing therapy.

With toxins purged from your body, you will be physically stable and ready to unpack the psychological component of addiction. A 90-day program, whether inpatient or outpatient, provides you with ample time to build a strong and stable foundation for sustained recovery. While shorter stints in rehab can be effective, they do not give you enough time to create a solid base for sobriety.

While every addiction is different and every treatment center is different, all the best 90-day rehab centers will utilize a personalized array of evidence-based treatments. These will include:

  • Medication-assisted treatment: For anyone with alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, or heroin use disorder, MAT can be a central component of a longer rehab. There are a handful of medications approved by the FDA to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings during detox. Medication-assisted treatment can also be used on an ongoing basis throughout treatment, always in combination with psychological and behavioral interventions.
  • Psychotherapy: Psychotherapy is the clinical descriptor for talk therapy like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Both these forms of psychotherapy can be effective for treating both addictions and mental health disorders. Your therapist will help you to change negative patterns of thoughts and behaviors, while also showing you how to implement healthier coping strategies when faced with stress in everyday situations.
  • Counseling: By working one-to-one with a counselor, you can explore what caused you to use substances, as well as working out how to avoid succumbing to temptation and relapsing. Group counseling provides you with a broader look at addiction, in addition to connecting you with peers undergoing similar experiences.

At 90-day rehab, you will also have access to a variety of holistic therapies, as well as family therapy and vocational development programs.
